The other day I was in the car with my husband and I heard these words on the radio. Sorry, allow me to clarify: On the Best Radio Station at Work. The one that often plays songs like this and this (can you tell my music repertoire is slightly outdated?).
Now the words:
"Heavenly hosts sing Halleujah. Christ, the Saviour, is born."
So I got a little weepy.
Christmas is important for dozens of reasons. It is a time of redemption and hope and joy, but I think more importantly than all, it's a time when it's acceptable to say that Christ is the Saviour.
Are you with me here?
We can publicly say that. Sure, we get a little backlash apparently (although, nobody has ever corrected my Merry Christmas greeting). But overall, there is a beautiful thing happening here.
Words like "Christ" and "Saviour" and "Hallelujah" and "Heavenly Hosts" have a tendency to pervade hearts like a drill bit kissing a wall. And on our way to work, or on our lunch break, we get to hear these words without the bat of an eye.
Churches, Christian friends, fellow bloggers, we are doing our best on a consistent basis to reach out, but let's be honest here: The best evangelist in Canada at this time of year is the public, non-Christian radio.
So I'd like to take a moment to thank public radio for reminding us of Christmas truth, in 3/4 time.
And on that note, here are a few lyrics we shouldn't miss this Christmas season.
"A thrill of hope. The weary world rejoices. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Hear the angels' voices! Oh night divine, the night when Christ was born"
- O Holy Night
- O Holy Night
"The Lord is come...
let every heart prepare Him room.
Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns!"
- Joy to the World
let every heart prepare Him room.
Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns!"
- Joy to the World
"Noel, born is the King of Israel"
- Noel
- Noel
"God and sinners, reconciled."
- Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
- Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
"Mary, did you know that when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God?"
- Mary Did You Know?
- Mary Did You Know?
"Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas day to save us all from Satan's power... Oh, tidings of comfort and joy."
- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
And yes...
"Santa knows that we're God's children; that makes everything right"
- Santa Claus is Coming to Town
