tonight I began a bit of a test to find out how my personal relationships hold up without the use of Facebook.
I emailed many of my previously FacebookFriends to let them know about the switch, give them my information, and exit peacefully. Sort of. John's quoting the original Robin Hood movies in the background. (He says there's only one movie.)
Over the next 365 days, until October 2 2011, I hope to evaluate a few things:
a) how do I fare without updating my status every 4 hours? while the things I do "echo in eternity", will it really make a difference if they don't pop up on random screens across Canada?
b) how do my relationships with others pan out when I don't see friends' faces on the side of my browser? will I remember to give them a call? will they remember to do the same?
c) will people remember to invite me to things? wedding invitations are now more popularly found in "upcoming events" sections rather than real life mailboxes. will I witness any nuptials or other in the following year?
d) ...will I finish the year with 5 followers on my blog? i need to make this place bumpin.
let's be friends.
without facebook.
by the way - the actual "leaving Facebook" process took just over an hour to ensure that all of my information was gone from public eyes (as far as I know). it's like Facebook really, truly doesn't want you to leave. even in deactivating your account, one slip up sign-in will bring you back to this crazy world.

Hey sam, I think you forgot to message me your e-mail address & phone number...I may have your old # but Im not sure if it is an old one.
ReplyDeleteI'm proud of you for deleting facebook though! Sometimes I wonder if I'm going to be using facebook my whole life. Will I be posting pictures of my wedding...married life....children all over the W.W.W? I don't know how comfortable I am with that. So, I'm proud to see you taking the step. You will be doing so much more that is productive with your time! I'm glad to see you're still blogging though! I started up again too, check out my new blogs! :D
