Make-Your-Own Super Cereal

Last month, my Dad called to tell me he's found the most amazing cereal of his life: Skinny B. It's got everything, he says. You gotta try it, he says. So I did. And it was awesome. The cereal is made by the company Holy Crap (not my favourite marketing strategy, but okay) and can be purchased in stores for $11/bag ($12.43 with taxes) or online for $29.85 for a 3-pack ($33.73). Which, I'll be real with you, is very expensive in my world. The bag is said to last a month or so, even though it only comes in a (very small) 8 oz pack: you only need to eat a few tablespoons at a time.

So it's good stuff, I'm not knocking it. And if you're in a crunch for time and want to up your health, then buy some from Holy Crap today.

But if you're looking to spend less and get a little more out of a similar cereal, I've got a solution for you.

Skinny B contains chia, hulled hemp hearts, and buckwheat. While delicious, I ate it and wanted more. Their cereal "Holy Crap" has a few more ingredients including apple pieces and cranberry, but I didn't want those. The idea of dried fruit in cereal has always irked me.

So I went to the Bulk Barn and made up my own super cereal. The cost is the same ($13 with tax), the yield is double, and the deliciousness is awesome. The benefit is, you can always add more of whatever you like.

To make your own super cereal, combine your own:

  • 7 oz. ground flaxseed
  • 4 oz. hemp seed or hemp hearts
  • 4 oz. slivered almonds
  • 4 oz. shredded coconut
  • 4 oz. chia seed (ground chia seeds give better health benefits)
  • Anything else you want to add!

And if you're asking why you should eat this cereal...

It's got B vitamins
Magnesium
Manganese
Thiamin
Niacin
Folate
Good for weight loss
Good for weight maintenance
Very high in fiber
Anti-inflammitory
Good for bones
Good for teeth
Good for brain function
Antimicrobial
Satiating
Detoxing
And of course,
Delicious.
