An Honest Review of the Best Shows on TV

So TV is GENERALLY wrapped up for Christmas. And no, don't pull that "we don't have cable" crap on me right now. WE don't have cable. We have the internet. It's 2012, friends. You can still know what shows are out.

And with this mini-hiatus I'd like to share with you my thoughts on this year's shows, now that we're mid-season. Why would you read this? Because John and I are very opinionated and passionate about our shows. That's why you read anything.

To kick off, I'll introduce my new favourite show, and one which I am so glad to be hooked on...

The Mindy Project.

Featuring Mindy Kaling, a fantastic writer (she wrote for The Office US, you know?), hilarious actress, and fantastic representative of what women actually look like. Thank you, Mindy, for not inducing self-loathing by maintaining an image that most people cannot achieve.

The writing is clever. And real. The little love-spark between Dr. Castalano and Mindy makes the show worth watching, alone.

"In five years... if we're both still single... can we make a pact.. to kill each other?"

The only change I'd make is that Mindy needs to stop having temper tantrum meltdowns. That is not acceptable, sister. Get up off the ground and do something.

New Girl

Aside from the fact that I am in direct competition with Zooey Deschanel for John's attention for 30 minutes, once a week, I love this show. I'm still confused about why Nick and Jess haven't realized that they're perfect for each other / meant to be, but I'll let that slide.

Again, the writing is hilarious. It's inspired me to bring a Douchebag Jar to Christmas events this year. It's pretty dynamic as far as character development goes: Winston persistently reveals that he is actually a six-foot child (this week we learned that he believes in Santa Clause, and last week it was shown that he is a sucker for bath time); Nick sometimes has his little melodramatic breakdowns which reveal there is something yearning inside of him to actually man up and be something... but that gets shot down very quickly; and then Schmidt, player that he might pretend to be, is a hopeless romantic and passionate friend/person/Jew. And then there's Jess, and I think the poster gives a pretty accurate description of the character we can expect: quirky, endlessly positive, and... a teacher. All teachers are like that, right?

Revolution

What if the power went out for good, but there was a way to get it back, but there was a bad guy who wanted to use it for evil, and he stole your brother, and kidnapped your mom (but you thought she was dead), and you had an uncle who used to lead this whole sinister power-grabbing plot, but now he's good, and you're just a naive seventeen year old girl who becomes quickly hardened with experience?

Revolution answers that deep question and many more in its mediocre plot line and overuse of Go-Pro cameras, less than great acting and generally bad writing.

A very, very tame version of The Walking Dead... except with no zombies... Revolution is kind of my guilty pleasure.

Parks & Rec

I am very aware that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are friends. And they love each other. And embrace each other in the female-comedienne-ness that unites them. And that us women need to stick together.

But I still pick a favourite, and my favourite is quickly becoming Amy Poehler (something I never imagined I would say.) Parks and Rec is not losing steam.

There isn't a lot I can say except, I love everything about Parks & Rec. First of all, it's really refreshing to see a person who cares about the government so passionately, even if that person is fictitious. Second, Andy and April are the cutest.couple.ever.

AWWWW.

I think that's about it.

Oh also, Tom.

And finally, I bring you to the most important show in all of our lives, considering it has been running the longest, at this point we watch it out of obligation in the same way that you call your Aunt that you have nothing in common with, because you have to.

How I Met Your Mother

Remember when they were this young? Alyson Hanigan is now 38 years old in real life.
She looks good, don't get me wrong, but none of them are fooling me.

UGH. Get it freaking over with already. So we KNOW that Robin doesn't end up with Barney. We know this. But we're in a two season runaround here with them chasing each other, and developing some seriously codependent behaviours, and can someone please explain to me how they don't have STDs yet? Because I think that's a borderline medical miracle at this point.

And I'm not sure if anyone who writes the show has done the math, but considering that Ted is now 100, I don't think it's viable any longer that his kids should look like this:

I hope the youth of today aren't picking up their math skills from the media.
Currently it is 2012. In 2030, his daughter looks about 17. I've been 17. I know what it looks like. She is certainly not younger than that, and she can't be older. His son, 15. Maybe 14, but I have a 15 year old brother, and I'm going to go with 15.

Which means that in 2015 his wife needs to give birth to his youngest, which takes 9 months of gestation, so let's give that 16 years. 2014. Two years prior to this, he needs to have a 17 year old. So at this point (logically), congratulations Ted, you're pregnant.

Except he is miles away from meeting his wife. If we were close, we would see signs of yellow umbrellas, etc.etc.etc.

I found this explanation on Facebook for a theory of how Ted meets his wife. It's actually pretty good.

Thank you, intense people on Facebook
And still, we watch the show because there is something lingering in us that just wants to know... also, has anyone noticed that the writing is now REALLY bad? Not funny? Really lame? But for some reason I still love it?

And that's that. Oh yeah, I'm also into Once Upon a Time, but it's even worse than Revolution so I won't engage.

  1. I dont watch any of those shows but HIMYM. Ive been watching from the beginning but I always buy the seasons on DVD. I dont know why. it's just a tradition. I dont even know when it's on TV! lol. So Dan bought me the latest season on DVD and it's sitting in his closet tempting me every day until Christmas.

You don't want Modern Family??? It's only the best show ever! Also, Big Bang Theory. It's kinda how my daughter got her name which I'm not sure I'm proud of. Oh and Parenthood is my serious show! :)
