Imagine that I'm Oprah, okay?
It's NURSERY TIME!
That was supposed to ring out sing-songy in your head. That's how I'm feeling right now (sort of) with planning the baby's nursery. Now, we have every intention to have our baby sleep in our room in a sweet little bassinet for the first few months of her life, however we do have a crib already & would like to be setting up her room as a play space & relaxing space. Plus I'm in nesting mode, and this is where I'm trying to nest (although I can't do most of the actual work... paint fumes, blah blah blah...)

This is more or less the colour of the wall (our wall is a little lighter) - source |
How the nursery is actually going to shape up is more or less irrelevant right now (is what I keep telling myself). John and my Dad started painting it today & the way we're decorating will change and adjust according to budget, energy, and time (I keep telling myself). I did have hopes for stenciling paint on the walls, but this has flown out the second story window.
Here are some ideas we like...
The Alphabet & Gospel
I'm trying to visualize what the baby will experience.
If from in the womb, she's learning how to curb her tongue to fit into my locality's dialect (which she is), then I have no reason to believe that a familiarity with letters and the Gospel will
not be beneficial. John and I can do a lot of our own letter-y art on Photoshop, too.
Frames for said cool art
I would love lots of
stuff for the baby to look at, lots of images and stories for her to create in her mind, but without the clutter that stuff brings. Frames are a great place for a variety of patterns, words, and visual stories that may otherwise not come together so well.
Colour & Lots of It
All too often I see nursery photos that are so bland the baby must feel like they live in a tub of peanut butter. That's cool for your Super Zen living room, but we're talking
nurseries. Colour, people, colour! Spark that baby's imagination! This doesn't mean smearing flourescent pink on the walls (
Emily at Our Nest In the City just painted her walls silver & white but still managed to stay true to COLOUR), but using unique places to give the nursery life!
Wall Decals
Affordable ways to get the stencil look... without the work! We just picked up some small Winnie the Pooh stencils today from Wal Mart for the baby nook.
Polka Dots
Just another way to get colour in there.
DIY
Getting my greasy, dirty little fingers all OVER my nursery is very much what I intend to do. Well, I intend to ask my friends to get theirs all over it too.. they have such wonderful sewing skills!

Hey Sam. Who told you that you couldn't paint? My doctor said as long as it was well ventilated and water-based (as most paints are now) you are free & clear to paint.
ReplyDeleteWe moved November 19th and since then I have literally painted 7 rooms and a hallway.
I like your ideas though. They are great - it looks like it is much easier to decorate if you know the gender. I just blogged pictures of our nursery. There is a lot less colour than I'd like - but we are going to add some "pops" once our baby is here and we know boy or girl.
Our midwife recommended not painting unless with the pregnancy-safe-odour-free paints, but generally she said to try to avoid it if possible - luckily it has been! I think knowing the gender definitely helps, but we're still trying to stay as gender neutral as possible juuuuuuuust in case. I loved your blog post!
DeleteIts cutteee!!!!! I love all the pics :D :D :D. The mobiles are just adorable.
